Into the Sun. My favorite album I have produced and written! From Here To Heaven was, eh. Kling Klang Bedlam was a party that I am still recovering from! But Into the Sun. That's something special. So many styles; industrial, ebm, rock, acoustic, soundscapes...it's just an explosion of creatively for all involved. Easily the most musicians I had playing on an album. Tom Palmer, Kyle Schact and John Coppock provided the electric guitars. My brother, John did a lot of sound programming and I really experimented with tape, samples and musical styles. Just about this whole album was recorded within a four year period. Compared to FHTH which was 10 years in the making. Most of my releases I'm like; oh man, ouch, eh, darn, etc, etc...But with ITS I'm; fuck yeah, alright, what, oh man...hahaha...it's strange listening to something close to twenty years old...for this album I always want to go back and write from that place...but it's just not possible. So the album is what it is. Just like me...soooo.

After almost calling it quits and a lengthy four year hiatus from the music scene, Fektion Fekler have returned triumphant with the release of the incredibly diverse and experimental "Into the Sun". Borrowing from the same vein of creative energy that spawned the brilliant Moksha "A People Undone" album that confused a lot of fans who were expecting a follow up to the successful and harsher "Kling Klang Bedlam" release, Robert and John Bustamante have opted to take the group in a much more organic direction, and the result is spectacular.

To fully understand the true scope and musical genius of this fantastic conceptual release, it is necessary for the listener to surrender all preconceptions of the term industrial, and give the disc an honest and thorough listen, and then the layers and emotions will unfold properly and the messages will be conveyed with blinding obviousness.

This is not your typical mainstream electronic album and is as far from a hit based cd as you can get. It is a journey into surrealistic and melancholy filled atmospheres that will draw you in with their strength and intensity, and hold you in a vice like grip from start to finish. And because of this fact, it is almost required that the listener approach "Into the Sun" as a whole, rather than a collection of songs, so it is possible to realize the full potential this disc has to offer.

The most prevelant difference fans will notice is the continual addition of more organic instrumentaion as opposed to what they are used to from Fektion Fekler. The Mentallo and the Fixer comparisons I have read in other reviews can officially stop. "Into the Sun" is proof positive that Robert Bustamante is a unique and talented musician in all respects of the phrase.

The European and American versions of the disc differ in a few key ways, mainly in the fact that the European Black Flames release is a double disc and features twenty tracks, some of which are missing from the Static Sky release. But this does not take away from the album. The American version is a finalized, minimalistic gem, solid all the way through, and the one I feel represents the band the best.

The continual evolution of Robert's songwriting is refreshing and rare in such a biased genre, and I salute him for putting out such an eclectic and honest release. The guitar work on the album is top notch and very catchy and the programming is top notch. This is by far the best work he has produced in my opinion, and I only see positive growth stemming from this cathartic change.

Intriguing and experimental to say the least, "Into the Sun" is a melodic, modern, and progressive masterpeice, and I heartily reccomend it to any who are interested in broadening their horizons with the possibilities of what can happen when you write from the heart. 9/10"

Fektion Fekler - Into the Sun

2CD, Black Flames Records / Static Sky Records, 2004

At first listen, Fektion Fekler’s “Into the Sun” sounded a bit dated to me. A sound reminiscent of the style the vast majority of artists have distanced themselves from in the past five years. While most of us used to live, eat, and breathe harsh vocal distortion on melodic synth routines, the progression of electronic music’s evolution has made bands that create this sort of composition scarce. Fektion Fekler picks up the slack in this area and has released a double CD full of both caustic vocal assaults laid to rhythmic, punishing synthetics and a testament to their creativity – strangely beautiful acoustic works along the lines of the “easy listening” genre.
The first CD is definitely classic Fektion Fekler with a little more progressive edge to the music. Distorted, grating vocals aplenty, accompanying very well-sculpted electronic arrangements. Every now and then, the first CD will give you a taste of what’s to come, a hint at the direction the group is going to take with the second CD. But for the most part, listeners will take great pleasure in soaking up the very well produced and brilliantly assembled angst-ridden sound that Fektion Fekler has been creating since their debut album, “From Here to Heaven.” Avid fans of Fektion Fekler’s classic work, please take note that their course is changing.
To be honest, I was a little confused as to if I had received the correct material to review when the second CD made its way into my changer. It seems Fektion Fekler has come into a new passion in life, one for the construction of laid-back folk and synthpop’ish stylings. The music on the second CD reminds one of In the Nursery or maybe something off the Projekt label. It’s a rather startling turn for the band as they’ve never really given any indication of moving away from the sound they were known for. But with all initial reactions aside, the music is actually quite good. Different, to be sure, but still a very clean, well-constructed sound that one would expect from a talented group like Fektion Fekler… except for the whole different genre thing. It took several listenings and several proddings from the higher up at Connexion Bizarre for me to finally accept that the second CD is actually pleasing to my ears and several additional tours of my changer granted it a permanent residence. I just can’t get over how different the music is, and how much I really do enjoy listening to it.
With as much talent and dedication (not to mention bravery, fans & reviewers can be jerks!) it takes to change the direction your band is moving in, Fektion Fekler deserves special recognition for the efforts they’ve made on “Into the Sun.” Lacking the ammunition for a twenty-one-gun salute, I’ll have to settle for giving their new album a five out of five habanero peppers. This is an excellent album and I would highly recommend it to those who consider their tastes open-minded.

Fektion Fekler -- INTO THE SUN [Static Sky Records]
This band has been around awhile (since 1989, actually), but this is their first new album in six years. The band is a duo of brothers Robert (electronic and acoustic instruments) and John (vocals) Bustamente, and their sound is one of highly rhythmic, melodic electropop. Their attack is frequently reminiscent of a stripped-down Massive Attack, especially on "Pigs Feet," but they're definitely not a trip-hop band; they probably have more in common with eighties keyboard synth-pop than anything else. Unlike a lot of EBM bands these days, they pretty much avoid aggressive displays of testosterone in favor of piling on layers of percolating, melodic, rhythm-happy keyboards. It's danceable without being obnoxious, filled with pinging keyboards and rhythms worthy of an early Depeche Mode album. "Through the Days" even downplays the keyboards, building everything around a catchy acoustic guitar before adding keyboards and beats to the layers of sound. Well-written songs and energetic performances make this enjoyable listening, and the willingness to switch between keyboard and guitar-driven songs keep things interesting. Worth checking out if you're down with catchy melodic dance-pop.
